Dive Meets 101

All divers should plan to attend the whole meet.

Who organizes and conducts the meets: Divers' parents organize and run the dive meets!  The dive reps organize the meets, communicate with the other team and provide supplies for the meet. The dive meet only happens because parents put in the work to make them happen!  Plan to volunteer at two home meets and one away meet.  You can help at the scoring table, provide hospitality, judge the divers, work concessions, help set up or clean up or transport the shade tents to away meets.

Schedule: Home meets:  Arrive at Rock Creek at 2:45pm to make sure you dive sheet is right and to warm up. The away team warms up between 3:30-4pm

Away meets: Arrive at the away pool at 3:15pm to make sure your dive sheet is ready and to start warming up at 3:30pm.

Divers dive in groups starting at 4pm:

8 and under girls

8 and under boys

9-10 girls

9-10 boys

11-12 girls

11-12 boys

Break - usually happens about 5:45pm for 15 minutes

13-14 girls

13-14 boys

15-18 girls

15-18 boys

Sometimes the girls and boys dive at the same time in the older age groups, depending on the total number of divers at the meet.

What is a dive sheet?: The information sheet that indicates the diver's name and diving group as well as the list of dives they will perform, the position and the degree of difficulty.  Divers should finalize this with the coach and sign the sheet at Thursday or Friday's practice for the meet on the upcoming Sunday.  The dive sheet is used during the meet to record and calculate the diver's score.

What is Diving as an Exhibition Diver?: A diver is categorized as exhibition when they are not able to do all the required dives for their age group.  Their score doesn't count towards the team's final score even if the exhibition diver places in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in their age group.

How does scoring work?: There are 5 judges - 3 from the away team and 2 from the home team plus a referee from the home team.  Each judge scores the dive and the announcer asks for scores, the judges hold up their score cards and the announcer reads the scores and the parents at the table record the scores.  For each dive, the highest and lowest score is thrown out and the remaining 3 are added together and multiplied by the degree of difficulty to get a final score for the dive.

After the age group is complete scores from all the dives are added together and places are awarded within each age group.

A team scores 5 points for a diver in first place, 3 points for a diver in 2nd place and 1 point for a diver in 3rd place, these points are awarded for each of the 10 age groups.  The scores are added together and the team with the higher score wins the meet.

If a team does not have a diver in a particular age category or if one of their divers doesn't score in the top three, they automatically are given 1 point for that age group.
